Fit, size range & sample approval
Pattern Making, Grading & Sampling
Approve the base fit before the size range moves forward. Pattern, grading and sampling work best when the base size, fabric direction and approval method are clear.
- Sample guide
- usually about 2 weeks after requirements are ready
- Main risk
- fit, construction and size range approval
- Boundary
- files, grading and size-set scope are confirmed by project

Starting-reference router
Start from the reference you actually have
A photo can start the discussion, but it does not automatically become a production-ready pattern.
Tech pack or size chart
Useful for checking base size, points of measurement and construction direction.
Existing garment
Useful for fit, proportion, sewing details and handfeel comparison.
Sketch or reference image
Useful for direction, but still needs base size, material and construction decisions.
Three technical stages
Pattern, grading and sampling do different jobs
The page keeps these stages separate so buyers do not approve one thing while expecting another.
| Stage | Input | Approval point | Output or next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern making | Reference, intended silhouette, base size and construction direction. | Base shape and key construction details. | A base pattern direction for sample making. |
| Grading | Approved base fit and intended size range. | How key measurements change across sizes. | Project-specific grade direction or size review method. |
| Sampling | Pattern, fabric direction, trims and sewing details. | Fit, measurements, material behaviour and visible details. | Approved sample or consolidated revision comments. |
Fit review loop
A sample review is a loop, not a straight line
If Canton Fashion makes a sample incorrectly because of its own execution, the confirmed policy is to remake it free. Buyer-requested changes receive one free modification opportunity.
- 01
First pattern
Prepare the base direction from the agreed starting reference.
- 02
First sample
Make a physical sample to check fit, material and construction together.
- 03
Fit and measurement review
Review balance, key measurements, movement and visible details.
- 04
Consolidated comments
Turn buyer feedback into one clear revision record.
- 05
Pattern correction
Update the base direction before repeating or approving.
- 06
Base-size approval
Approve the base fit before grading or bulk planning.
Grading ladder
Grading should extend an approved base fit
It should not multiply an unresolved fit problem across every size. Scope, file format, grade-rule table and size-set samples are confirmed by project.
| Check | Why it matters | Project boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Base size approval | The size range depends on a fit direction that has already been accepted. | Do not start grading from an unresolved sample. |
| Grade movement | Key measurements may change differently across body areas. | Rules are not assumed universal across product categories. |
| Size-set review | Some projects need more than one sample size to confirm proportion. | Whether this is required and billed is confirmed by project. |
| Pattern file format | Buyers may expect CAD, DXF, PDF or only production records. | Deliverable format must be clarified before work starts. |
Measurement control sheet
Make fit comments easy to approve
Use a simple control sheet to keep measurements, tolerance and buyer comments in one place.
| Field | What it records | Why buyers review it |
|---|---|---|
| Point of Measurement | The exact area being measured. | Avoids vague comments like make it smaller. |
| Base size | The sample size under review. | Keeps the approval tied to one actual garment. |
| Grade movement | How the point changes across the size range. | Prevents mechanical grading assumptions. |
| Buyer comment | The approved or requested change. | Creates a clean handoff into the next sample or bulk. |
Deliverable boundary
Clarify the output before the work starts
The service does not automatically include every possible pattern or grading file.
Always clarify base size, measurement direction and sample purpose.
Confirm whether grade rules, size set or digital files are needed.
Record consolidated comments, approved sample and production handoff notes.
Keep material behaviour and construction changes connected to the sample review.
Technical FAQ
Common pattern and sample questions
Can you start from an existing garment or reference image?
Yes. An existing garment gives better fit and construction information. A reference image can start direction, but base size, material and construction still need confirmation.
When should grading begin?
After the base fit is approved. Grading should extend the approved base fit, not spread an unresolved fit issue across all sizes.
Is a size-set sample required?
It depends on category, size range, fit risk and buyer expectation. The review method is confirmed for the project.
Which files will I receive?
Pattern, grading and file format deliverables are project-dependent. Clarify whether you need production records, PDFs, CAD files or another format before work starts.
